The remarkable Vera Chapman was born in 1898 in Bournemouth, England; lived in South Africa until moving back to England to become one of the first women to matriculate as a full member of Oxford University; founded The Tolkien Society, taking the member name of Belladonna Took, and persuaded J. R. R. Tolkien to become its honorary President. She began writing books in 1976 (her 78th year!) and continued to do so until her death in 1996. But what first drew me to these books were the glowing covers by the Brothers Hildebrandt.

Book Count: 1340.
