Love Stinks: The Skunk Valentine Card

Thinking about my last post, I did a quick sweep of eBay and Google and easily came up with all these images of skunk valentines, the card to send to your unfavorite classmate when I was in school. If you got one of these, you knew you had your own personal antagonist. Back in those days, when people said "kids can be so cruel," we took it as permission.

St. Valentine's Day Bears And Bunnies

Happy St. Valentine's Day! After the J. C. Leyendecker picture of the busy saint is a run of my favorite style of valentines from when I was in grade school back in the early 70's, a kind of almost Walt-Kellyish fuzzy animal accompanied by howlingly groaner puns. In those days most valentines for children came in packs with no two alike; the fun challenge was to decide which of your classmates would get what. There was almost always one appropriate for the teacher, one suitable for your particular crush, and one for your least favorite kid. I remember one year in my older brother's class there was a boy who got all cards featuring skunks!
