Happy Birthday, J. R. R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born this day, January 3, in 1892, to Arthur and Mabel Tolkien, an English couple living and working in Bloemfontein, South Africa. It would be hard, at this date, to calculate the impact this orphaned Catholic philologist had and continues to have on our modern popular culture not only by his own work in literature but by his influence on other writers, artists, film-makers, and musicians. His work brings a breath of beauty, courage, and faith to lives that are otherwise sterile, shallow, and bleak. "For some the only glimpse. For some the awaking." Happy birthday, Professor.
